Using a Mac is a two-way experience. macOS X remembers how you use your computer at the same time as you are learning how to use your computer. When you switch on a new Mac you must provide a name or id for a relationship to develop (other operating system relationships are available).
Logging out is much much less harmful than holding down the power button or unplugging the mains supply. From the Apple menu choose “Logout Clever Person…”
Frozen computer / spinning beach ball = choose logout first
